Susan Turner
Like many artists, Susan Kahler Turner’s interest in art began in childhood, but it was not until much later in life that she was able to seriously develop her artistic skills. In the past years, she has taken instruction from local watercolor artist, Betty Anglin, classes at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center in Newport News and the Contemporary Art Center in Virginia Beach. She is currently taking oil painting instruction from Hampton artist, Joanne Howard. In 2006, Turner began to show her pastel and oil paintings in the juried art shows of the Woman’s Clubs of Virginia and has won numerous awards at the local, district and State levels. Recently she has explored the use of pointillism in her oils.
Turner's inspiration is clearly the natural world and she enjoys working on pastels while sitting in her garden in Newport News or using photographs she has taken while traveling. She also enjoys drawing and painting subjects from unexpected angles or at the micro level so that the intricate and beautiful details and colors of her subjects are emphasized, both from a distance and at close range.
