Marshall Turner

I grew up in Moultrie, Georgia, which was and is a very nice little town; but while I lived there it was long on agriculture and short on handmade pottery. I saw wheel-thrown pots for the first time when I arrived at the University of Georgia as an art major in 1970. I didn't even have to get my hands dirty before I knew I wanted to do that.

After graduation I worked at Jamestown Island, Virginia for four years making pots based on seventeenth century artifacts found there. In 1979 I joined Perrin Creek Potters (later Sarah Creek Potters) in Gloucester Point, a co-operative group of independent potters sharing studio and retail space, earning a living making a range of useful items in high-fired stoneware. After the property SCP occupied was sold in early 2004, I began teaching pottery at Christopher Newport University, and also at the nearby Peninsula Fine Arts Center.

I get a lot of satisfaction from knowing that my things are used often and provide a quiet daily enhancement to people's lives. I live in Williamsburg, Virginia.
