Glass Artist, Susan Welteroth, has been designing and working in glass for over 20 years. Through her business, Eyecatchers Glass, she creates glass panels and small gift items in fused and stained glass. She adds traditional vitreous painting, sandblasting, and casting for special effects to enhance the work. Like many other artists, Welteroth has had a lifelong interest in art. A graduate of Syracuse University School of Art, she earned a B.F.A. in design. After graduation, she worked as a staff artist with C.A. Reed Co., Westvaco Corp., designing paper tableware, then became a designer for Congoleum Flooring in New Jersey. It was this design experience that carried over into her newly found love of working with glass. While living in Oklahoma, Welteroth was asked to design and fabricate windows for a home builder. That was 1983 and the beginning of her business, Eyecatchers Glass. The business has changed and grown since then, but has always kept to the ideals of originality and fine workmanship. Her goal has always been to show traditional stained glass as an art form rather than craft. She has shown her work and received numerous awards at local Shows and Festivals. Wildlife has become the main focus of her art. She first became interested in waterfowl and fish through her clients here in Tidewater Virginia; many of whom want those subjects in their glass panels. It has become very interesting and challenging to depict the birds and fish in glass in a realistic way. In striving to be original, Welteroth often moves beyond the flat rectangular panel to an irregular edge and incorporates 3-dimensional areas within the design. When showing her work at local shops and art shows, she often has to do some mass production, but she prefers working on individual commissioned pieces that add beauty and joy to those who see and own the work.
