Naomi Parkin's earliest memory of sewing is making doll clothes with her sister. They were about 4 and 5 years old. Neither of them were tall enough to reach the treadle so they took turns sewing while the other knelt to work the treadle by hand. Years later she and her sister had a shop in Phoebus, Virginia until she moved out west where Parkin started designing clothes, wall hangings, quilts as well as carving wood. Carving birds had been Parkin's main focus until she was given a wonderful gift by one of the Blue Skies members who could no longer sew. She gave Parkin her beautiful materials: fabrics, buttons, and laces, to allow Parkin to design her own clothes and accessories. Now Parkin, once again, has embraced her first love, fabrics. Parkin loves opening her cabinets of fabric and letting the colors and materials create the inspiration for her next project. With designs that are livable and affordable, Parkin's main problem is coming up with so many inspirations in her head faster that she can make them. Sewing, for Parkin, is such a joy and it is very gratifying to her when people like her work. |
